Chapter 14
Plow On No Sand
(A Message to Sisters of the Universal Heavenly Way)
(Preserved by OmNi From the Teachings of His Mother)
(Note: This message of the Universal Mother transmits the historical voice of women. It also reviews the social fact that over the last three to four thousand years, human society has become a harder environment in which to live. The softening power of femininity can help; women can be supported in stepping forward and taking more responsibility for the world. Spiritual work would be the best aspect for their contribution.
When Chinese society shifted from being female-centered to male-centered, the hardening of the social atmosphere and culture caused women to withdraw. This painful pattern occurred throughout the world at different times in history, and although it may not be the social position of women in much of the modern world, the general trend of male-centered thinking and policymaking has not ended yet.
In earlier stages of male-centered societies, women were denied an education and were not allowed to work outside the home. They were also considered intellectually inferior and had no political voice. In effect they were relegated to the status of slaves, along with men who were physically, financially or socially weak. Among children, female babies were not considered as valuable as male babies and in rural farming areas it was not uncommon to kill or give away female babies. Essentially, females were treated like a commodity, and still are in some primitive societies and cultures.
My [OmNi] own mother [Maoshing’s grandmother] was given away by her parents to a couple by the name of Zheng. She was educated and cared for by that couple and spiritually assisted by a woman teacher as well as by my father. In this article, I present my mother’s gentle voice of encouragement to all women to do more for themselves and society. In past decades, I was hesitant about giving this article to the public, but people are more educated now and they have a better opportunity to objectively observe what has happened in human history without emotionally overreacting.
Generally, my spiritual offering to modern people is the encouragement to engage in spiritual self-cultivation and development. Up to now I have not really touched upon the problems of society. In spiritual matters however, everything must be reflected on by people as a whole.
Spiritually, it is clear that men and women are equal partners in life and should work together at solving the problems of human society. Today, Maoshing and I hope that we can encourage men to listen to their conscience and respect their coessential duty to improve the condition of the world. The direction in which men have taken the world must be reversed if life on earth is to survive. The subtle spiritual leadership of women is the key to this necessary transformation. We hope men can realize the value of supporting women as they make their due spiritual contribution. Just as women have been the keepers of the home, they should now become the keepers of the world so that all people can live in peace and happiness.
